Stay Protected, Stay Safe

Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic was declared a little over a year ago, hand sanitizers have gained prominence, becoming an indispensable accessory for going out. But do you know how to use them effectively?

First, we need to understand how hand sanitizers work in removing germs. Most hand sanitizers are alcohol-based and formulated to attack the cell structure of the germs by damaging their lipid layer. For a virus, the sanitizer will disrupt its outer coat. In contrast, the sanitizer will disrupt and destroy the cell membranes of bacteria.

While hand sanitizers cannot replace soap and water if your hands are dirty or greasy, they are nevertheless much more effective in reducing the burden or infestation of bacteria on the skin. As such, they can be practical and useful in scenarios where soap and clean water are not available, such as when one is outdoors.

What about concerns about alcohol poisoning? This is why you should never ingest hand sanitizers, as this can cause alcohol poisoning in both children and adults. As such, parents need to supervise their children when using the hand sanitizer.

Avoid hand sanitizers that list methanol as one of the ingredients. Methanol can be very toxic if used repeatedly and may cause serious health problems, especially if ingested accidentally.

Do you know how to use your hand sanitizer properly? First, ensure you place an adequate amount of hand sanitizer onto your palm. Rub your hands together until they are dry. This should take around six to eight seconds. Do not rinse or wipe the hand sanitizer off.
