Many people use the terms ‘sanitizer’ and ‘disinfectant’ interchangeably, but did you know that there are important differences between the two?

When it comes to dwell time (the duration needed to take effect), sanitizers generally take a shorter time and are effective pretty much instantly, whereas disinfectants can take up to 10 minutes to work.
Sanitizers are best for surfaces and objects that have a lower chance of coming into contact with dangerous bacteria or should not be cleaned with powerful chemicals. These include kitchen utensils and children’s toys. Meanwhile, disinfectants are essentially used for cleaning surfaces with high-frequency contact such as doorknobs, lift buttons, light switches, tables and more.
A crucial thing to note is that disinfectants are not for hand use. This means that disinfectants are not meant to be used on our skin. As for hand sanitizers, keep in mind that they do come with expiration dates. Therefore, it is always important to read the labels of a product carefully for safe and effective usage.
